What Is Infant Circumcision?

Infant circumcision is a minor surgical procedure that removes the foreskin covering the head of the penis.

The procedure is usually performed during the newborn period or within the first few months of life. At this age, healing tends to occur quickly and the procedure can generally be performed using local anaesthesia.

Circumcision may be chosen for medical, cultural, religious or family reasons.

How the Procedure Works

1
Consultation and Assessment
The doctor examines the infant and explains the procedure to the parents, answering any questions before treatment begins.
2
Anaesthetic
A local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort and ensure the baby remains comfortable during the procedure.
3
Circumcision Procedure
The foreskin is carefully removed using a safe and controlled technique. The procedure itself usually takes only a short time.

After the procedure, the baby is observed briefly before returning home.

When Is Infant Circumcision Performed?

Infant circumcision is typically performed during the first few months after birth.

The exact timing may depend on:

the baby’s overall health
parental preference
cultural or religious considerations
medical factors identified during examination

Before the procedure, the doctor will examine the infant and confirm that circumcision can be safely performed.

Benefits of Infant Circumcision

Infant circumcision may provide several potential health benefits.

These may include:

reduced risk of urinary tract infections during infancy
lower risk of infections affecting the foreskin
prevention of foreskin conditions such as phimosis
reduced risk of some sexually transmitted infections later in life

Families may also choose circumcision for cultural, religious or personal reasons.

Recovery and Aftercare

Infants typically recover quickly after circumcision.

Parents will receive clear aftercare instructions which may include:

keeping the area clean
changing nappies frequently
monitoring the healing process

Most babies return to normal feeding and sleeping patterns shortly after the procedure. Healing usually occurs within two to three weeks.

How much does it cost?

Professional infant circumcision appointments with transparent fixed pricing of $500 for eligible infants.
