Adult Circumcision Procedure

Adult Circumcision Procedure

Adult circumcision is a procedure that removes the foreskin from the penis. While circumcision is commonly performed in infancy, many men choose to undergo the procedure later in life for medical, personal or cultural reasons.

If circumcision is to be performed, it should be in a safe clinical environment by adequately trained practitioners with appropriate anaesthesia and analgesia.

Why Men Choose Circumcision

Many adult men choose circumcision for medical reasons or personal preference.

Common reasons include:

phimosis (tight foreskin that cannot retract)
recurrent infections of the foreskin or glans
balanitis (inflammation of the head of the penis)
paraphimosis (foreskin trapped behind the glans)
hygiene difficulties due to foreskin problems
personal or cultural reasons

Circumcision Methods

-
Surgical Circumcision
The foreskin is removed surgically and the wound is closed with dissolvable stitches.
-
ShangRing
A specialised circumcision device designed to simplify the procedure.

The most suitable method will be discussed during consultation.

Before the Procedure

Before undergoing adult circumcision, a consultation is required to discuss the procedure and answer any questions.

washing the genital area
shaving the surgical area
avoiding stimulants such as caffeine before the appointment

Patients are encouraged to arrange for someone to drive them home following the procedure.

How the Procedure Works

1
Consultation and Assessment
A medical examination and discussion of the procedure.
2
Anaesthetic
Depending on age and circumstances, appropriate anaesthesia is used to minimise discomfort during the procedure.
3
Circumcision Procedure
The foreskin is carefully removed using a surgical technique. The procedure itself usually takes around one hour.

Patients remain briefly for monitoring before leaving the clinic. The entire visit may take up to three hours including preparation and recovery time.

Risks and Possible Complications

Circumcision is generally considered a procedure when performed by an experienced practitioner.

Possible complications may include:

bleeding
infection
swelling
irritation of the glans
inflammation of the urethral opening

Most complications are minor and can be managed with appropriate care.

Benefits of Circumcision for Adults

Circumcision may provide several medical benefits.

These may include:

prevention of foreskin infections
reduced risk of recurrent balanitis
treatment for phimosis
improved hygiene
reduced risk of some infections later in life

For some families, circumcision is also an important cultural or religious practice.

Recovery After Adult Circumcision

Recovery for adult circumcision usually takes longer than for infants.

mild swelling or discomfort during the first few days
stitches dissolve naturally
normal activities resume gradually

Healing generally takes four to six weeks for adult patients. Follow-up care may be arranged to check healing and change dressings if necessary.

For ShangRing procedures, outer ring is removed after 7-10 days and inner ring falls of in 48 hours
