What is the Foreskin?
The foreskin is the fold of skin that covers the head (glans) of the penis. At birth, the foreskin is naturally attached to the glans and gradually becomes retractable as a child grows.
For many boys, the foreskin becomes partially retractable during early childhood and fully retractable by puberty in most males. This process happens naturally and should not be forced.
The foreskin helps protect the glans and contributes to natural lubrication of the area.
Foreskin Hygiene
Maintaining good foreskin hygiene helps prevent irritation, infection and inflammation.
Under the foreskin, bacteria, natural oils and dead skin cells can collect. This substance, known as smegma, is normal but should be washed away during regular hygiene.
Healthy foreskin care includes:
The foreskin should never be forced back, as this can cause tearing, bleeding and scarring.
Common Foreskin Conditions
Several medical conditions can affect the foreskin and the head of the penis. Many are treatable with medication or improved hygiene, although some cases may require surgical treatment.
